Welcome to the course site for HIST 390: The Digital Past. In this online course you will learn how to do history using a variety of digital tools. This course — which fulfills the university’s Core IT requirement — will teach you the fundamentals of information technology through creative engagement with historical methods and sources. Throughout this summer session, you will learn how to use and apply digital tools to the study of local history in the United States, concentrating on a location (city, town, village, or neighborhood) of your choosing.
This course is organized into five sequenced modules (see the link to Course Modules in the menu bar). Each module contains guiding frameworks, as well as assigned readings, videos, and activities. The content in the modules gradually builds from your initial question or idea to the beginnings of your final assignment: a digital local history project plan.
